Headline Trends

African equities are carrying a constructive but uneven tone. Nigeria has the strongest capital-markets catalyst: Reuters and other outlets report that Dangote Refinery is aiming to raise approximately $5bn through an October listing, potentially one of the largest African equity offerings in recent years. The timetable, valuation, exchange mix and final prospectus remain the decisive facts; this is a reported target, not yet a completed offer.

Ghana's latest reported activity is more concentrated. Ghanaian Times reported that GSE trading value rose 251%, with MTN Ghana accounting for the dominant share. That is positive for turnover and market visibility, but it should not yet be read as a full-market liquidity breakout. The GSE's own recent announcements also point towards exchange innovation and continued work on listings and market infrastructure.

Kenya's NSE has crossed KSh4tn in market capitalisation for the first time, according to local market reporting. Separately, Reuters reported plans for East Africa's first AI-focused ETF. Together with Safaricom's M-PESA-linked stock-trading distribution, the NSE is showing the clearest retail-product and market-access innovation in the region.

Sentiment Snapshot

Mixed, with a bullish primary-market bias. The bullish case is supported by large prospective listings, stronger Nigerian and Kenyan market valuations, improved local participation and new exchange products. The caution is that liquidity remains concentrated in a small number of heavyweight counters, while currency, inflation, rates, governance and repatriation risks still determine whether foreign and diaspora capital stays engaged.

The Caribbean picture is quieter. Jamaica's suspension of Portland JSX shares over overdue audited accounts is a reminder that disclosure discipline can matter more than headline valuation in smaller markets. On the TTSE, the 6 August official summary showed the Composite index down 1.31 points to 1,003.86, while the All T&T index rose 2.75 points to 1,432.34. That divergence suggests selective rotation rather than a broad risk-on move.

Deep Dive

African exchanges

  • GSE: Reported turnover has improved sharply, led by MTN Ghana. The commercial question is breadth: whether banks, consumer names, pension funds and retail investors begin contributing more consistently. Ghana's exchange also highlighted product innovation and global exchange trends in a 3 August webinar, while its public announcements archive remains the best primary source for listing and market notices.
  • NGX: The immediate catalyst is the reported Dangote Refinery IPO. President Tinubu has also been reported as backing an NNPC listing plan, reinforcing a policy narrative around deepening domestic ownership and market capitalisation. Investors should distinguish political intent from an approved offer timetable.
  • BRVM: Bridge Bank's approximately $118m share sale was reported as selling out in under 24 hours in July. That is a strong signal for demand for credible West African financial institutions, but it also raises allocation and secondary-liquidity questions. BRVM banking names remain a key regional theme.
  • NSE Kenya: Crossing KSh4tn is a material confidence marker. The proposed AI ETF would widen product choice, although the investability test will be fees, underlying liquidity, index construction and investor education rather than the AI label itself.
  • JSE South Africa: Current reporting is more company-specific than index-led. The wider African IPO narrative is increasingly cross-listing and pan-African: issuers may seek the deepest available pool rather than remain tied to a single domestic exchange.

Caribbean exchanges

  • Jamaica: Portland JSX shares were suspended after audited accounts became 91 days overdue. This is negative for the issuer's tradability and a useful warning for smaller companies considering public markets: timely reporting is part of the product.
  • Trinidad and Tobago: The TTSE's 6 August data showed a relatively small but active market, with notable volume in CIBC, NCB Financial, Republic Financial, Massy and other counters. Price changes were generally modest, consistent with a selective, income-oriented market rather than a momentum-driven one.
  • Eastern Caribbean Securities Exchange: No material new IPO or capital-raising event was corroborated in this run. The market remains more relevant for regional sovereign, bank and corporate funding than for frequent high-volume equity issuance.

IPOs and capital raises

  1. Dangote Refinery: Reported target of roughly $5bn, with October 2026 timing cited. Treat as prospective until regulators, advisers, prospectus, offer structure and exchange listing are confirmed.
  2. Bridge Bank, BRVM: Approximately $118m share sale, reported as oversubscribed or sold out rapidly in July. This is the clearest recently completed West African equity-raising signal in the research window.
  3. Angola's Unitel: A reported oversubscribed IPO raised more than $300m in late July, demonstrating that sizeable African offerings can attract demand when the issuer is strategically important and the offer is well distributed.
  4. Caribbean: No clearly corroborated new IPO was identified across Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago or the Eastern Caribbean in the current window. Jamaica's Micro Market pipeline remains worth monitoring, but a confirmed offer should not be assumed from preparatory activity.

Diaspora investment products

No newly launched product explicitly branded as a pan-African or Caribbean diaspora IPO vehicle was corroborated. The practical access trend is more important: Kenya's M-PESA-linked stock-trading proposition lowers the distribution barrier for retail investors, while large cross-border IPOs may create demand for diaspora-focused feeder funds, regulated brokerage access and FX-efficient custody. Any such product would need to solve KYC, suitability, tax, currency conversion, custody and repatriation properly rather than simply market itself as โ€œdiaspora investingโ€.

Commercial Opportunity

The sharpest opportunity is infrastructure around access, not another generic investment app. A Ghana- or Nigeria-first platform could partner with licensed brokers and custodians to provide diaspora investors with verified issuer information, transparent cedi/naira-to-sterling or dollar FX pricing, compliant onboarding, pooled exposure to exchange-listed shares and bonds, and automated reporting. The first wedge should be distribution and trust: a small number of high-quality issuers, clear risk disclosures and bank-grade custody.

A second, nearer-term B2B opportunity is an IPO readiness and investor-relations practice for African companies preparing for domestic or cross-border listings. The market needs better governance packs, audited-data rooms, valuation narratives, English-language reporting, diaspora roadshows and post-listing liquidity support. This is asset-light, commercially realistic and can sell before a full consumer platform is built.

Watch List

  • Dangote Refinery: Confirm October timing, proposed exchange(s), bookrunner, valuation, free float, currency and whether a JSE or other cross-listing is genuinely part of the plan.
  • NGX breadth: Track whether the rally extends beyond major banks, telecoms and energy-linked names, and whether institutional flows improve secondary liquidity.
  • GSE participation: Watch MTN concentration, pension-fund activity, bank-listing progress and the development of retail-access products.
  • BRVM pipeline: Monitor whether Bridge Bank's success brings more regional banks and industrial issuers to market.
  • NSE Kenya: Follow approval, methodology and launch timing for the AI ETF, plus adoption of M-PESA-based securities trading.
  • Jamaica disclosure: Watch Portland JSX's route back to compliance and any further suspensions or restructuring among small-cap issuers.
